In a significant stride towards advancing knowledge and expertise in the field of Surgical Oncology, the Department of Surgical Oncology of  VCC recently conducted a two-day live operative workshop on head and neck cancer. Held on the 12th and 13th of September 2023, this groundbreaking event was conducted in collaboration with Medtronic as part of their esteemed PACE program.

The workshop garnered participation from esteemed surgeons hailing from different corners of the country, making it a gathering of some of the brightest minds in the field. Under the skilled guidance of Dr. M. S. Ganesh, the senior professor and head of the Department of Surgical Oncology, the event witnessed a plethora of intricate demonstrations and discussions.

Among the surgical feats showcased, attendees witnessed complex head and neck cancer resections, including the meticulous high ITF clearance for oral cavity squamous cell carcinoma and the challenging Total Laryngectomy procedure. The workshop also shone a spotlight on cutting-edge techniques, such as the utilization of Indocyanine green dye to identify lymph nodes and lymphatic channels—a promising development in the field.

The workshop’s microvascular reconstruction team, composed of Dr. Thyagaraj J and Dr. M. E. Sham, delved into the role of 3D printing technology in optimizing operative steps, ultimately aiming for better functional and aesthetic outcomes for patients. Dr. Amritha G. P and Dr. Giridhar C. M, on the other hand, shared various tips and tricks related to neck surgeries, engaging participants in interactive discussions and breakout sessions.

Hands-on learning was a significant component of this workshop, with a wet lab session offering participants a chance to refine their vascular suturing skills. Dr. Durgaprasad R. B, Professor and Head of the Department of Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery (CTVS), was at the helm of this informative session.

The two-day event, brimming with academic intensity, concluded on a high note with a certification session for all participants. This certification stands as a testament to their dedication to advancing their surgical skills and knowledge in the realm of head and neck cancer treatment.
