Bengaluru, 24 February 2025 – Vydehi Institute of Medical Sciences & Research Centre,Bengaluru, has achieved a groundbreaking milestone by becoming the first private medical college in India to launch the Intuitive Robotic Onboarding Program and Education (I-ROPE). This initiative is in collaboration with Intuitive, a global leader in minimally invasive robotic-assisted surgery (RAS).
The I-ROPE program is designed to introduce resident surgeons and fellows to the latest advancements in robotic-assisted surgery, equipping them with the skills needed to navigate evolving medical practices. The program was inaugurated by Mr. L. K. Atheeq, IAS, Additional Chief Secretary to the Chief Minister of Karnataka, at an event held at Vydehi Institute of Medical Sciences & Research Centre, Whitefield, Bengaluru.
Also present at the event were:
Dr. U.T. Iftikhar Ali Fareed, Chairman, Allied & Healthcare Council of Karnataka
Dr. Riyaz Basha, M.D., Registrar (Evaluation), Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences, Karnataka
Dr. Kalpaja D A, Chairperson, Vydehi Group of Institutions
The program utilizes the da Vinci X 4th Generation surgical system, enabling residents to gain hands-on experience with one of the most advanced robotic-assisted surgical platforms available today. Vydehi Institute introduced this technology in February 2024, and within a year, has successfully completed over 250 robotic surgeries.
This collaboration between Intuitive and Vydehi Institute aims to bridge the gap in traditional surgical training by integrating robotic-assisted surgery into early-stage medical education. With a well-structured curriculum that includes robotic technology training, digital simulation models, cadaveric models, and stepwise surgical training, the I-ROPE program will prepare future surgeons for cutting-edge advancements in surgery.
Dr. Kalpaja D A, Chairperson of Vydehi Group of Institutions, reaffirmed the institute’s
commitment to providing world-class healthcare and medical education. Dr. M.S.Ganesh, Professor and Head of the Department of Surgical Oncology, emphasized that early exposure to robotic-assisted surgery will equip future surgeons with critical decision-making skills.
Rohitt Mahajan, Vice President and General Manager of Intuitive India, expressed enthusiasm about the expansion of the I-ROPE program into private hospitals, stating, “This collaboration marks a significant step in making robotic-assisted surgery an integral part of medical education, ensuring better patient outcomes through minimally invasive care.”
Vydehi Institute joins leading government institutions such as AIIMS Delhi, AIIMS Bhubaneswar, Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital (Delhi), and Armed Forces Medical College (Pune) in offering the I-ROPE program. Since its inception, over 300 resident surgeons have gained exposure to robotic-assisted surgery through this initiative. This program aims to train early-career surgeons in robotic-assisted surgical techniques using the da Vinci X 4th Generation system. With a structured curriculum including digital training, soft tissue animal models, cadaveric models, and hands-on console training, the program prepares future surgeons to master robotic surgery.
Join us in celebrating this historic achievement in medical education and surgical training!
